GRE

The GRE General Test, administered by ETS, is the most widely used standardized exam for graduate school applications in the US and globally, especially for STEM, social sciences, and business programs. It includes Verbal Reasoning (130–170), Quantitative Reasoning (130–170), and Analytical Writing (0–6). Since the 2023 revision, the test duration has been shortened to approximately 1 hour and 58 minutes. For Chinese test-takers, the math section is relatively easy and high-scoring, while the verbal section—featuring extensive academic vocabulary, complex sentences, and reading comprehension—poses the main challenge. The writing section assesses argumentation and critical thinking. Although an increasing number of programs are GRE-optional, a strong GRE score still serves as a solid credential for applicants changing fields, with non-traditional backgrounds, or aiming for PhD programs and scholarships. It is recommended to start preparation in sophomore or junior year, allowing time for a retake. Scores are valid for 5 years.
