The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online English proficiency test taken at home via a computer with a camera. It lasts about 1 hour, costs around $65, and delivers results within 48 hours. It has been the fastest-growing language test since the pandemic. Scores range from 10 to 160, and the test uses adaptive questions (harder if you answer correctly, easier if you don't). It is accepted by many institutions in the US and Canada, and some in the UK and Australia. However, top-tier universities still require IELTS or TOEFL, so always check the latest policy of your target school. For Chinese test-takers, DET offers good value and a short preparation period, but the question types are unique (describe an image, repeat what you hear, impromptu writing/speaking), and the test has strict anti-cheating measures (you must stay in view, no one else allowed).
